Fun with 3-D Glasses

Although I feel the last post is incredibly important and necessary, I also feel it calls for a cheer-up.  Enter the Erica tortures her dogs show.  Actually, they were more than happy to oblige…oddly enough. (It’s only a matter of time before I wake up with my eyebrows shaved off.)

Props courtesy of the movie theater that gave us 3-D glasses for the not-3-D showing of Up this summer.  Waste-not, want-not, that’s what I say!  I couldn’t throw them away, they were still in the wrapper!  I did it for the Earth.   :-)

Local Distempter Outbreak: FREE vaccinations offered

SPCA of Central Florida is offering free distemper vaccinations to the general public at the Orlando shelter.

Saturday, August 1 – Wednesday, August 5

8am – 10am (no appointment necessary)

2727 Conroy Road, Orlando, 32839 (across from Mall at Millennia)

As you may have heard on the news, the SPCA of Central FL (Conroy location) had to make a very tough decision last weekend when an outbreak of distemper swept through the shelter.  Very sadly, all dogs residing at the shelter were euthanized in order to prevent further contamination.  I get verklmept every time I even think about it.  It’s a horrible, horrible situation and the Conroy location is not the only one that’s dealt with this is the past months (Marion County, Lake County, as well as Orange County Animal Services have found themselves in this horrendous situation.)

In the hopes of preventing outbreaks and protecting all of Central Florida’s beloved animals (whether they currently have homes or not) the SPCA of Central Florida has been diligently and efficiently making their effort to inform the public and explain the situation.  This is why they are great, they are all over it.  They have beloved shelter pets, their own pets and many supporters and they wasted no time in getting the word out.  Below, are some facts about distemper from Senior Vice President of Resource Development at the SPCA of Central FL, Donna Lendvay.

  • Canine Distemper is caused by a virus related to the virus that causes measles in humans.  It affects dogs, ferrets and wildlife.  However it does not infect humans or domestic cats.
  • The distemper virus is VERY contagious. It is passed from dog to dog through close contact from secretions such as urine, feces, saliva, eyes and as an airborne pathogen.
  • SYMPTOMS:  Yellowish-green or dark green discharge from the eyes and nose, often accompanied by sneezing and general lethargy. In the beginning stages, distemper mimics kennel cough. Other symptoms include anorexia, fever, discharge from the nose and eyes, pneumonia, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • This disease is most commonly seen in puppies three to six months old and in young un-vaccinated dogs. Puppies can be infected in the womb when the virus crosses the placental barrier
  • This is probably not the best time to be visiting dog parks. Yes, dogs are social and that is precisely the problem right now. However, this doesn’t mean your dog (or you) can get lazy, either. Walks – controlled on a leash – should continue as part of the daily routine.
  • The best way to protect your pet from distempter?  VACCINATE, VACCINATE, VACCINATE!  When a widespread outbreak occurs…it would be wise to annually vaccinate even those dogs that have received a three year vaccine.

To prevent the public from inadvertently adopting a dog that is incubating this disease, the SPCA of Central Florida temporarily closed the Orlando shelter.  However, the veterinary clinics will remain open.  Cat adoptions at the Orlando shelter will reopen on Friday, July 31.  They will start receiving dogs again on August 1st and dog adoptions will reopen August 9th.

The Seminole shelter has not been affected by this outbreak. Therefore, receiving and adoptions at the Seminole shelter remain open Monday through Saturday 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday noon – 4 pm.

My prayers and condolences go to all those pups that paid the ultimate price for simply being unwanted.  It is utterly heartbreaking.  And my thanks to the SPCA of Central Florida for their immediate response in educating and informing all of their supporters and the general public.

Dolce & Romeo

Dolce is a gorgeous Yellow Lab with a spunky personality.  She has a beautiful face and a do-what-I-feel way of going about things.  I love it!

She likes to hang by the pool and run around with her brother.  However, on this particular day there was no swimming or marathon runs.  Dolce tore her ACL just before our session!  And although I would’ve loved to have her model a lampshade around her neck for an after-surgery session- it’s the latest trend- I think she prefers a more classic style ;-)

I was extremely careful when working with her and trying to minimize her activity but she really had no intentions of letting the fun police ruin her day thank you very much.  She pirate-legged around like having a fourth leg had always been an inconvenience anyway and tried to convince me that she was fine.  But I’ve been around the block and I know how kids take advantage of substitute teachers and the like so I made sure she took it easy regardless ;-)

Romeo (he sure is!) is the most handsome young man.  A Chocolate Lab and new brother to Dolce, he’s a riot to play with and I know Dolce will be so happy when she’s all fixed up so she can run around with him again.

He has the sweetest little doh-doh face and I just wanted to pinch his cheeks over and over!  He also has lovely sea green eyes that I got lost in.  Certain sunlight brings out his auburn highlights (which are natural as he does not need to see  a colorist like the rest of us…if only…sigh) which altogether makes his outside as wonderfully colorful as his personality within.

He’s young but has done very well with his trainer (as has Dolce) and aims to please but wants to make sure he has fun while he’s at it.Thanks for all the puppy love!

Mojo

This is Mojo.  He is ROTFL.  I told him the one about the skeleton who walked into a bar and ordered a beer and a mop.  Think about it for a bit, it’ll click.  And then I was all, “What did zero say to eight?  Nice belt!”  (You’ll get that one too in a few hours.)  He thought they were hysterical and I like anyone who laughs at my jokes.

I had to bring out the funny artillery because Mojo is super-duper camera shy.  He remained pretty much elusive for our entire shoot- ha ha- but he warmed up to the camera a little, especially when his people sister came out to play.  He LOVES his people siblings.  And they certainly love him back.

He is a wonderful family dog, and he has such a snuggly coat!

He’s really, really sweet and like all good dogs, loves a good roll in the grass after a dip in the pool.

He likes to stand on the first ledge of the pool and just watch his sister play around.  His belly fur gets soaked and I think it makes such pretty patterns.  ;-)

Mojo, you are certainly a lucky charm, thank you! :-)

Abby & Gracie

Goodness gracious, just look at them.  Aren’t they just squeal-worthy?  Abby, the silver coated delight, is a Yorkiepoo.  She loves attention and cookies of course!  She was all about the camera, giving me her best looks.  She’s been through quite a bit with her health but you’d never know it by hanging out with her.  She seizes the day and carries rays of sunshine in her pocket to hand out to everyone.

Gracie, a Yorkie, is a perfect compliment (and strong competitor for attention) to her sister.  She didn’t quite approve of the click that the camera makes and hence, remained elusive so I had to make some bribes and back-end deals to capture her pretty mug.  I’m not proud of it but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.  ;-)

I kid, but seriously, Gracie is just DARLING!  I love her little face, her hair is like champagne and her button eyes just make me want to bolt her to my lap and pet her till the cows come home.

I had a really nice morning with these two and their parents- thank you all!

Goldie & Sasha

“Weeeee!!”  Goldie is a Golden mix with no shortage of energy.  She loves her own private agility course in her yard and she did not miss an opportunity to show off her killer skills…or her beauty.  She’s focused and ready for action at any minute and she is most entertaining if I do say so.  She’s also gorgeous and oh so SOFT!  I just love!

Sasha, Goldie’s older sister, is mellow and gentle and kind and sweet and soulful…need I go on?  She’s just so peaceful and brought to our session the kind of energy that yoga is supposed to provide.  She lowers the heart rate and completely puts one at ease.  Her eyes tug at my heart and you just want to engulf her in an endless hug.  Sigh. She and Goldie compliment each other so wonderfully and they are perfect companions.  Harold and Maude.  Ozzy & Harriet.  Sugar and Spice.  I just love working with these ladies! :-)

It was a wonderful morning and a fabulous shoot.  I left their house calm, relaxed and more flexible.  Yoga, schmoga.  I’m hangin’ with these chicks more often. ;-)

Angel & Max

This pair is killing me, can you get any cuter?!  The answer is no, and they are very aware of that. ;-)

Angel, is an angel of course.  And angels always annihilate toys and take food away from their brother.  :-)   She’s perfectly entitled because look at that little face!

She has a few back issues but you’d never know because she never misses her acupuncture appointments.  For the record, I did not encourage all of the fun she was having because I figured she’d want to take it easy…but I lost that battle.  She told me how things were going to go down and I was like, “okay, ma’am.  You da boss.”  She is pretty awesome.

Max is an equal competitor in the handsome department (well, they have 4 other siblings and, I have to say, they’re all tied).  He’s a little more go-with-the-flow…Patient and observant and he’s made of sugar.

I just loved all of his bits and parts!

This truly is one of my faves of his ears!

Dachshunds are just adorable and their bums are no exception.  Angel, on the left, going through her door for the 100th time and Max, on the right, climbing onto his outdoor bed is just too much.  We got finished right as a storm moved in but I had some serious fun with these guys that morning.  Thank you! :-)

Harper

Harper is an adorable young Golden.  She’s soft and cuddly and and has the sweetest little smile, right? :-)

She loves peeking in the bushes, laying on the bushes (which flattens them and she’s not really supposed to but it’s just so cute!) and tip toe-ing behind the bushes into her secret lair where she brings all her toys.

She’s mellow and peaceful and her expressions make me melt a little bit.

Thank you Harper for a fantabulous morning! :-)

Jackson & Maggie

Jackson is a giant sucker for a frisbee.  Or, rather, whoever is throwing it for him is the sucker.  He is tireless and determined and SO very focused on the task at hand.  It is incredibly fun to watch him play! :-)

And, ladies…when this handsome bachelor is not retrieving colorful objects and keeping in shape by swimming 3,000 laps he works with children.  Lemme hear it… “Awwww”  :-)

Jackson is an official R.E.A.D. Dog.  The R.E.A.D Program promotes communication and improves reading skills in children by having them read to dogs.   How cool is that?  Reading aloud can be nerve-wracking and what better way to gain confidence and hone your skills than to practice with someone who offers no judgement and lots of love?

Maggie is also a big player in the community service world.  She, too, is a registered R.E.A.D Dog and makes many visits to area hospitals, special needs centers, schools and nursing homes.  She loves a good game of frisbee (of course) and if you promise not to say anything I’ll tell you a secret…

Come closer…  Maggie has three legs but DO NOT say anything because she DOES NOT KNOW and there’s no use in pointing it out because she wouldn’t care anyway.  She’s just as fast as her siblings (and there’s 5 including Jackson) and she grabs that frisbee with the speed of a torpedo.  ;-)

She also looks dazzling in her blue towel- I mean- her majesty’s robe.  Yes.

These guys just rocked this session and it is a complete fun fest working with them.  Both are members of Therapy Dogs Inc. and are stellar citizens of the community if I do say so myself!

Oodles of Doodles…and then some {Kiwi, Dash, Luke, ZZ, Andi, Bear, Casey, Lucky, Rachel}

I had the recent pleasure of traveling to Cincinnati, OH for this hug fest!   Their sessions took place over a number of days and I really couldn’t have had a better time with all these guys and girls.  They are simply wonderful family dogs, raised as such, with love and care by Rainmaker Ranch Labradoodles.  All live in their respective, loving abodes but came together this particular week to mix, mingle and model.  ;-)

Kiwi is the softest, fluffiest, most snuggliest ball of love.  She is so kind and her fur is just to die for.  I couldn’t get enough of her.  I was so excited to see her again too, because she’s grown into such a lovely lady!  I photographed her last year when she was just a wee tyke, just as playful.  She loves to lounge around she just makes you want to take the day off and pour yourself a lemonade.

Dash lives up to his name.  He’s constantly on the move, his energy never depleted.  He was however, quite amenable to allowing me to capture him as still life once in a while ;-)

He has a beautiful coat of stark white and black and always enjoys a playmate to tussle around with.  He’s quite a character and I was happy to have gotten to know him.

Luke, below, is another snuffly snuggler with a deliciously soft coat and a super-friendly demeanor.  He’s easy going, super playful- he loves a kong toy- and will just plop down anywhere.  This is what I adore about him though, he’s  like the chubby kid at summer camp who no one really talks to, but if you spent a day making crafts out of popsicle sticks with him, you’ll find you’ve made a lifelong friend.  He’s sincere and kind and does not judge.  :-)

The first thing I noticed about ZZ is that I had a sudden craving for cookies and cream ice cream.  In fact, he has been a major contributor to the recent poundage I’ve aquired while working on his photos.  I will be happy when his photos are complete and I can switch back to sorbet or yogurt or something ;-)

Seriously though, he’s a distinguished gentleman who loves a ride in a convertible.  He’s calm, mature and reserved for the most part but he does love a good sprint here and there.  Both Luke (above) and ZZ are also co-owned by Kingdom Labradoodles, here in Orlando.

Andi is a little ray of sunshine.  She’s quirky, has so much personality and is always up for whatever.  It doesn’t matter, she’ll make fun out of anything.  And you know why else I love her?  Because she looks like an over-loved teddy bear that has been passed down over generations providing comfort and happiness to all who have the honor of snuggling with her.  I’m convinced she’s related to Fozzie, actually, and I do love me some muppets.  :-)

Andi shares a home and sofa with the next four adorables below.

Bear is an Australian Shepherd.  He’s wise and calm and like the rest of his family, really likes cookies.  He’s like the elder in a tribe that everyone goes to get advice from.  He’s revered and respected and has a comforting air about him.  He transfers peace to all who decide to lay next to him and I certainly got my fill of serenity.  :-)

Casey, sorry to embarrass you but I just had to put this picture of your nose up.  It keeps making me laugh and everyone could always use a good chuckle.  Thanks for delivering.  Casey is an adorable poof of happiness.  She’s kinda goofy and certainly fun-loving.  She likes to smile, loves cookies even more and also enjoys catching the breeze on the outdoor sofa from time to time.  She’s certainly a character!

Lucky, has a unique look and one that I’m certainly drawn to.  She’s absolutely adorable.  I love her expressions and the scattered white hairs on her face and her…um…beard?  Ha ha, it’s just fabulous and it makes her no less of a lady.  LOL!  She naps in the most adorable positions and has a particular favorite corner of the couch that suits her.  A gentle girl with soulful eyes indeed!

Rachel is another Aussie and you’d never know that she was 12!  I know!  I want to know what skin cream she uses.  She is incredibly sweet and gorgeous and wanders around doing what she pleases.  What she pleases is to avoid the camera at all costs- ha ha- she’s definitely camera shy but I was able to get a few of her before she realized that’s what I was there for.  Hee hee!

Thank you, thank you, thank you Krista & Kathy & Jenny for bringing me up for several days of non-stop doodle rompin’ fun.  It was nothing but a pleasure.  Your dogs are wonderful, beautful and all so unique.  My highest appreciation to you also for being such kind, incredibly responsible and respectable breeders.  It has always been obvious that the care, love and life of your animals are the priority.
