FURBALL 2009 } $12,500 raised by Photohound Dog Photography!

Saturday, May 16th was the SPCA of Central Florida’s annual FurBall Auction Spectacular.  And, let me tell you…It. Was. Awesome.  These guys and gals work SO hard to pull off this thing off, I don’t even know how they do it.  Let this be my public applause (if you were my dogs right now you’d hear me clapping) to an amazing group of people.

Held at Sea World Orlando each year, the auction is a mega fundraiser for the SPCA here.  There’s food, drink, wild animals roaming around (seals, anteaters, emus, you name it), tons of people and super cool stuff to bid on.  This year’s dress code was Florida Tacky so there were spot-on ensembles of Florida crackers and overdone tourists.

It was pretty sweet. As far as fundraisers go, this is probably like the best ever.  I mean, where else can you bid on a “Snip and Clip” neuter package which includes a vet appointment for your four-legger AND a vasectomy for the man in your life!  I’m not kidding, it was there and someone bid on it because that’s what people do for the animals ’round these here parts.

So, what I’m crazy excited about is the money that Photohound helped pull in this year. Photohound Dog Photography donated 13 photo sessions for auction at the FurBall.

Images from those photo sessions will be selected to make the 2010 SPCA Calendar, available this fall.  It’s a huge project and one that I’m always stoked to be a part of.

All 12 sessions went beyond the maximum bid as people clammered, competed and elbowed their way through crunch time.

By the time the lot closed, only 2 sessions were left, all the rest getting snatched up by guaranteed bids.

The last session available at the cutoff went into a bidding war and auctioneer was called over.

The cover of the calendar, which was part of the live auction, sold for $3,500 bringing the grand total to $12,500!!   Ho-Lee Cow! I  couldn’t have been happier or more pleasantly surprised with this outcome and I’m so thrilled to have been a part of it all.  I can’t wait to meet all the winners.  It’s going to be a fun summer. :-)

Jack

Jack, as you’ve probably noticed, is a Jack Russell Terrier mix.  I’m thinking he has a speck of Basenji in him.  However, that’s all superficial because inside he’s all terrier, make no mistake.  I had so much fun with this guy!  We played…a lot.

We borrowed a neighbor’s yard in which there was waiting, a soccer ball.  Jack had at that moment found his new obsession.  I was all set to become Jack’s new BFF but noooooo…Mr. Soccer Ball had to butt in.  Seriously though, he LOVED that thing!  He naturally became entranced and proceeded to shake, poke, pounce and almost circus balance on it. :-)

Actually any ball, really, will do.  He’s an awesome catch and fetch partner, he gets so excited and he brings it right back like lightning!  He has an endless supply of energy and curiosity which I definitely enjoyed watching.

He’s a very good boy, loves his Mom & Dad and has the cutest little freckles on his legs, it makes me want to squeal- hee hee! :-)   Thank you, Sir Jack, for including me in your games and adventures.  It was a most pleasant afternoon. :-)

happy mother’s day.

This is for my mom.

All others, PLEASE READ MY PATHETIC DISCLAIMER AS TO WHY I PUT THIS RIDICULOUS HOMEMADE VIDEO ONLINE.

About 7 years ago, during my last semester in college, I needed to finish up my curriculum with French II.  Our final project offered options.  We could either stand up in front of the entire class and give a presentation in French.   Um, no. Or…make a video of ourselves speaking French.  I went with the latter but decided I’d still keep my favorite position behind the camera.

So, I made a stupid little short film with our dogs who are destructive and tore up the house all the time and I did the voice-over in French.  I didn’t ask if that still qualified for the assignment because I didn’t want to know.  And I WILL WARN YOU, the French is REALLY, REALLY bad.  Like, if you speak French you might not even understand what I’m saying and you will probably find that I made up words and conjugations that don’t exist.  Because the phrases I didn’t know I looked up in random sources. There probably isn’t a French phrase for “pillow un-stuffing” but I made it.  Which is why subtitles are so helpful.

Anyway, why did I put this thing online?  Because…MY MOM.  HAS BEEN BUGGING ME.  FOR SEVEN YEARS.  Despite my repeated warnings that it mildly undercuts my cinematic abilities and it will be a scar on my production resume, she brings it up at least once a month.  “You HAVE to put that video online”.  “Erica, promise me you’ll put that video online.”  I try and warn her of the ramifications of subjecting people to less than mediocre and badly produced filmmaking but she just. won’t. listen.  I really think she just wants to see her granddogs on “tv”, or the “tube” as the young folks say.

Either way, here we are and I couldn’t think of a better Mother’s Day gift than embarrassing myself and our dogs on the interweb in her honor.  I also know that if I posted this video, she’ll be (according to a prior agreement) obligated to start writing her novel.  The. Game. Is. On.

Other notes:  You may notice our boxer hadn’t yet made it to his neutering appointment.  Don’t freak out.  Rest assured, he is most certainly neutered these days.  I take too many pictures of shelter dogs to not live the gospel. And, in case you were wondering, I got a “B” on the assignment.  My French was obviously atrocious but I think the professor may have included my effort into the grade…or maybe the he had destructive dogs too.  ;-)

If you find it kinda funny, I’m glad to have made ya laugh.  If you find it excruciatingly dull, I’m sorry, and you can go watch the Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent video again to get you back on kilter.  :-)

Happy Mother’s Day Meemart!  You are an amazing woman, a constant giver, and the only one for which I would post this video for.  :-)

Cami & Hannah

Yeah, I had to go to the ER after this session because my heart melted.  Aside from the medical ramifications this session was a pure delight.  Both labradoodles, Kingdom’s Cami and Hannah’s Prayer are perfect friends and offered gobs of entertainment.

Cami is a chocolate-coated delicacy that I just wanted to eat up…or snuggle with a whole bunch.  She is the younger of the two and is a total goofball.  She bounces and flails and jumps and looks at you with those caramel eyes and you just want to die laughing or hug her and never let go.  Seriously, that face!  (sigh.)

She also takes quite pleasure in weaving in and out of the curtains, getting wrapped around in them and ultimately making me want to stuff her in my bag and take her home.

Hannah is the more serious of the two but is not without the giddy-ness that doodles are affectionately known for.  She too, is a riot.  She has the most adorable little button eyes and loves a good romp and run.  She gets super excited when she meets new people and is pretty decent at playing fetch.  Who knew, right? ;-)

She has a mop of soft, fluffy fur that you can get lost in…a perfect snuggle bunny.  And her little puff feet are too cute!

Thank you Hannah and Cammie for a dynamic afternoon and a lot of LOL!  :-)

Poodle Palooza!

Yes, my socks were rocked!  As if you had to ask.  I had the wonderful opportunity of photographing this private, annual event known as Poodle Palooza.  Put together generations of 20+ poodles (a family reunion as it were- I know, I should’ve had t-shirts made ;-) ), a yard acting as a sports arena, a lake for splashing and an awesome cake and you’ve got yourself a poodle party.  This definitely goes down in the books as totally awesome.  And poodles are no dainty dames.  They play hard core: think Project Runway meets World Wrestling Federation.  I was thoroughly entertained and everyone I met was just wonderful.  It was an ab fab time and a perfect party.  Thank you, Erin, Lance and Leo for having me out to photograph this 8th wonder of the dog world! :-)
