New Orleans { Mardi Gras } Mystic Krewe of Barkus

Why can’t everywhere be Louisiana?  I’m serious, these people know how to party.  Welcome to the 17th annual Mystic Krewe of Barkus parade.  Although I was primarily in Baton Rouge during my stay, work happened to bring me to New Orleans on this particular weekend…so I snuck out for a little dog fix.  ;-)

The weather was great and yes…you wish you’d have been there!  This year’s theme:  “BatMutt:  The Bark Knight”.  Past year’s funny pun-ies include such classics as “Jurassic Bark”, “Lifestyles of the Bitch & Famous”, “Tails from the Crypt” and “Joan of Bark”.  I know, I just can’t take it- ha ha!!  Mystic Krewe of Barkus was created to draw attention to homeless pets and benefit various adoption and rescue organizations in the area.  The parade makes its way around the French Quarter and of course is led by royalty so…lets all hail the Queen!

Lousiana } Behind the Scenes

If you visit this blog ever so often you’d know that I was in Louisiana for the last couple of months, working on a movie. It was a great show and the crew was FANTASTIC but most importantly…there were production dogs. This post is for them because they brought rays of sunshine to our long days and chi to our stress. Everyone should have dogs at work, the world would be a much better place.  I’m not being dramatic- seriously. Dogs. Workplace. Best thing ever.

Olive ran the Art Department and did a fine job of scouring the nation for the best props and superb scenic design.  Yeah, he had a little help but that’s only because he doesn’t have thumbs, give him a break, geesh!  He’s also hard of hearing so ever so often I’d barrel into the art department and realize he was still soundly sleeping on his Dad’s backpack or some random scrap of fabric, not even knowing I was there.  I would squeal because he’s so freakin’ cute and he would continue snoring.  He was my boyfriend.  sigh.  And I will miss him.

Baby made sure her Mom was able to relax after a full day of baby-sitting.  Fitting, right?  Her Mom was the nanny for one of the Producer’s children.  A lady never tells her age and neither does a Baby but between you and me she’s, shall we say, “experienced”.  And I absolutely adored her.  She’s a sucker for a cookie and will tell you when it’s time for her evening snack.  I don’t kid, she ambles out of her resting place to come over to you and bark until you get that snack bucket out.  Then, she takes her cookie and makes her adorably crickety way back to her bed.  Other than that she does whatever the heck she wants because she’s old enough not to care- ha ha!  :-)    She totally has that attitude too, eye rolling and all.  She’s full of sassafras that wraps around a sweet soul.

Licorice held the position of comrade and entourage to actress, Famke Janssen.  He is her pride and joy and understandably so- he’s got total appeal!  His world revolves around his Mom and he exudes importance.  I’m so serious.  When he first trotted into our office I was so excited I went over to him and expected him, of course, to fall in love with me.  He looked me up and down, then told me I needed to make an appointment.  I naturally, fell in love.  I’m drawn to the hard-to-get types.  From what I saw he can play a good game of tug but the rest of his day is spent patiently waiting for Mom’s breaks.  I tried to tell him a joke and he gave me the “we are not amused” look.  ha ha!  The day I got some photos of him, we happened to be shooting in a government building and he had found the the biggest chair in the room and claimed it.  He stayed in his executive chair and perked up whenever he heard anyone say his Mom’s name.  Thank you, Licorice for the time spent silently squealing over your handsome mug.  :-)

Barkley

Oh Barkley…just look at that face!  Do you just want to get pummeled by kisses from this guy?  Of course you do!  He has a vibrant personality wrapped in a thick coating of sweetness.  And he certainly made me laugh more than a hundred times.

He is super curious and LOVES to play in his beautiful New Orleans courtyard where there are delightful smells of flowers and all sorts of things to investigate.  He’s always looking for the next big adventure.

His whirlwind of play and energy is replenished by adorable 30 second naps where he splays out into butterflied pork chops.

These naps, however, are always interrupted by the sinking filling that there’s something to fetch, chase and investigate.  He LOVES showering you with the treasures he collects, which of course you are supposed to throw immediately.  ;-) He has such a proud and confident air about him.  As his Mom says, “no fear”- hee hee!  He bounces right into a good time and insists you come along for the ride.

He was fantastically entertaining and has cutest little dog tush, right?  ha ha!! :-)

Barkley was the bomb and makes me want to spend WAY more time in New Orleans.  Thank you, Barkley for showing me how it’s done in NOLA.  :-)

Spanky

Of course, right?!  Spanky is a delightfully charming and highly mischevious boxer.  Yet another wonderful rescue, this one from Louisiana Boxer Rescue, he just stole my heart.

Spanky is indeed the character.  He’s confident and laid back and listens well.  However, he does have a creative streak.

I was captivated with stories of his party animal nature.  From clanging the recycling bins around to knocking over chairs, chewing zippers and stealthily snaking a meal he is certainly an awesome piece of work and I absolutely adore him for it.  He has such charisma and a goofy James Dean cool, I wanted to take him home with me.

As his Dad said, Spanky’s ho-hum face in these lounging photographs can only mean he just spread shrimp peels all over the couch or something- ha ha ha!! :-)   I caught him on a relaxing, rainy day so I was happy to lounge around with him.

Keelan

Keelan just steals your heart, bottom line.  She is the sweetest, most gentle and adorable little girl you would ever meet.  A wonderful adoption, courtesy of Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue in New Orleans, she has become a treasured and most loved part of the family.

It is unsure how she spent the very early years of her life but she is quite timid when you first meet her, is scared of everyone (men in particular)…and she has a curious rippled dent in the very top of her head. Once she realizes you just want to shower her with kisses, though, she is your very best friend.

She’s incredibly intelligent, listens to her Dad very well and can steal a piece of pizza off your plate with the stealth of an eagle. ;-) And she runs like a new born deer, her back legs never communicating with her front- hee hee!  It’s so funny to watch her boing around!

She is a special little gem and peaceful soul that now lives her days in peace, comfort and love.  A fabulous dog, a fabulous rescue! :-)

MOVIES & MARDI GRAS…Availability in 2009

Happy New Year Everydog!  If you’re thinking about booking your session (I know it’s one of your New Year’s Resolutions, right?) here’s your chance to plan ahead.  I’m currently accepting appointments in Florida for April 2009 and beyond.

So, grab a pen and open your brand new calendar (bonus points if the calendar is the from the SPCA of Central Florida) and pick the best date for you.  Then give me a ring (or shoot me and email) and I’ll do the same in my new calendar and we’ll be all set to go!  :-)

In the meantime, I will be enjoying the first part of 2009 with the lovely folks of Louisiana, their crawfish, their Mardi Gras (Krewe of Mutts Parade included) and their movie industry.  For about 2-3 months, I’ll be working on another film up there (and meeting some new doggie clients in between).  If you’re in the Baton Rouge or New Orleans area and would like to schedule a doggie photo appointment, I will be booking a limited number of weekends.

And I will be keeping everyone posted with all the goings on.  I hope to be able to attend the Krewe of Mutts parade again on Sunday, February 15th.  The theme this year?  You’ll love this…”Pawraiders of the Lost Bark”.  Hee Hee!   I can’t wait to see the floats and costumes for this one!  So, ya’ll keep checking back for news, updates and of course photos de chiens.
