Tails Magazine November Issue (little miss maya bee matyas)

When Tails Magazine contacted me again for their November issue, I was delighted.  When they told me what image they wanted to use, I morphed into pageant mom extraordinaire.  I called everyone, I emailed everyone.  “Maya’s going to be famous and she’s walking around the house still so humble and down to earth”, I’d say.  She handles fame so well.  Needless to say, I am proud.  She looks dazzling and characteristically mischievous, way too smart for her own good, and not about to give that zebra toy up anytime soon.  Congrats Maya, you will always be my little star.

By the way, should you wonder why Maya’s right ear looks like a craft project…she went and got herself an aural hematoma (or what I call “Perogie Ear”) and she had surgery.  Now she has what looks like a cornfield of multiple stitches in her ear….I took her Comfort Cone off for the press junket so she wouldn’t be embarassed.  ;-)

Roxy

Dear Roxy, I’ve been singing Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” ever since I started working on your photos.  It’s beginning to wear on me, I must say.  But…your face can stay stuck in my head forever because it’s so darn adorable, I can’t get enough of it!  “I just can’t get enough, I just can’t enough.  We slip and slide…”  Okay, on to Depeche Mode and the rest of this post. ;-)

Roxy is, you’re never going to believe this, ten years old!  Her looks have obviously not changed since she was a wee tyke because she still has that bear cub face.  Wouldn’t we all like to age this well?

I cannot begin to describe how sweet, well-mannered, well-meaning, considerate, patient, friendly and easy-going she is.  She’s a treasure and I really had a wonderful afternoon with her.

A peaceful and most genuine soul, she loves to give lots of little kisses and she hugs too!  If you ask her for a hug, she will come over, sit on her hind legs and gently place both her paws on your shoulders (you must also be sitting down, for a lady doesn’t jump on people ;-) )

Thank you, Roxy for showing me the favorite spots in your home and letting me in on just how awesome you are.

Fun with 3-D Glasses

Although I feel the last post is incredibly important and necessary, I also feel it calls for a cheer-up.  Enter the Erica tortures her dogs show.  Actually, they were more than happy to oblige…oddly enough. (It’s only a matter of time before I wake up with my eyebrows shaved off.)

Props courtesy of the movie theater that gave us 3-D glasses for the not-3-D showing of Up this summer.  Waste-not, want-not, that’s what I say!  I couldn’t throw them away, they were still in the wrapper!  I did it for the Earth.   :-)

FURBALL 2009 } $12,500 raised by Photohound Dog Photography!

Saturday, May 16th was the SPCA of Central Florida’s annual FurBall Auction Spectacular.  And, let me tell you…It. Was. Awesome.  These guys and gals work SO hard to pull off this thing off, I don’t even know how they do it.  Let this be my public applause (if you were my dogs right now you’d hear me clapping) to an amazing group of people.

Held at Sea World Orlando each year, the auction is a mega fundraiser for the SPCA here.  There’s food, drink, wild animals roaming around (seals, anteaters, emus, you name it), tons of people and super cool stuff to bid on.  This year’s dress code was Florida Tacky so there were spot-on ensembles of Florida crackers and overdone tourists.

It was pretty sweet. As far as fundraisers go, this is probably like the best ever.  I mean, where else can you bid on a “Snip and Clip” neuter package which includes a vet appointment for your four-legger AND a vasectomy for the man in your life!  I’m not kidding, it was there and someone bid on it because that’s what people do for the animals ’round these here parts.

So, what I’m crazy excited about is the money that Photohound helped pull in this year. Photohound Dog Photography donated 13 photo sessions for auction at the FurBall.

Images from those photo sessions will be selected to make the 2010 SPCA Calendar, available this fall.  It’s a huge project and one that I’m always stoked to be a part of.

All 12 sessions went beyond the maximum bid as people clammered, competed and elbowed their way through crunch time.

By the time the lot closed, only 2 sessions were left, all the rest getting snatched up by guaranteed bids.

The last session available at the cutoff went into a bidding war and auctioneer was called over.

The cover of the calendar, which was part of the live auction, sold for $3,500 bringing the grand total to $12,500!!   Ho-Lee Cow! I  couldn’t have been happier or more pleasantly surprised with this outcome and I’m so thrilled to have been a part of it all.  I can’t wait to meet all the winners.  It’s going to be a fun summer. :-)

Rock it, Blog it, Pass it on

So get this..I’m really excited.  One of my very favorite musicians, Neko Case is about to release a new album called Middle Cyclone.  I just LOVE her music.  Really.  And I want you to love it too.  Know why?  Because from now until February 3rd she and her record label ANTI- are donating $5 to Best Friends Animal Society to anyone who downloads and posts the song on their blog.  Yay, for cool ways to help the animals!  And yay for getting a sneak peek at this song.

Listen to the song by clicking the link below.

So if you want to help raise that money and you have a blog to do it, learn how here.  It’s super easy and cold hard cash goes right to Best Friends.

Time to stock up on doggie soap!

Jillian Says!, maker of my favorite “Pooch Polish” will have a booth at the Fall Fiesta so…Jillian says… “Please grab your dog, take a walk down there and go stock up.”  The products are all hand-made, good for you (my dog Mac prefers to eat the soap but it’s okay because the ingredients are all safe and natural), smell great and make you feel fantastic.  And they’re pretty, so there.  Check out the candles, soaps and new line of teas too!

Maya’s new leash on life

Maya has had an AWFUL allergy season starting last spring and continuing until present day.  At one point she managed to make her chest into a giant scab which was soooo sad…and icky!  It took constant supervision, finger snapping and “tssstt”-ing to get her to leave it long enough to heal but it eventually did.  There were also lots of medicated baths and Buddy Boo Boo involved.  In the meantime, her regular old harness wasn’t helping with the skin aggravation (scratchy thread and all) so Dad went hunting for a new outfit.  Imagine my surprise when he ordered something pretty awesome…and all by himself too…aint’ that peachy?

This leash and harness by Planet Dog is just perfect.  Made of eco-friendly hemp that’s woven into wonderful softness and lined with fleece it offers incredible comfort for the fragile and dainty skin of a…pit bull ;-)   The leash handle is also fleece-lined for the fragile hand of Mom when dainty pit bull pulls like ox during walk.  Just thought you might like to know should you happen to be in need of a sweet new leash/harness ensemble.
